American Horror Story is what you call an anthology series. That means that each season has the same cast, but completely different characters and plotlines. The first season is called Murder House, and chronicles the mishappenings of the Harmon family. The second season is called Asylum, and it centers on a corrupt east coast mental asylum in 1964. The third season is Coven, about witches in New Orleans. I can understand why it can be confusing!

There are a handful of actors who come back as different characters each season. (Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Francis Conroy and Even Peters star in ALL three seasons (sorry if I forgot anyone))

Though there is no connection between all the stories, they are all set in different times and places so maybe that's why. A kind of not really connection is each season there is a clue as to what the next seasons theme will be. Season 1 Billie Dean mentions bad souls in an asylum. Season 2 (asylum) Sister Jude plays "I put a spell on you" and says something like "I'll get on my broom and fly out of here" and is seen chasing kids with a pointy hat and broom. This is leading people to believe season 4 will be Carnival or Circus related because misty day mention it being like a carnival. Who knows we might get some real fun Easter eggs one day.
the plot changes completely after each season and so do the characters i don't watch the show all i know is that the depressed girl who killed herself and was with tate in season 1 plays a girl who kills people when she has sex with them in another season that is what i gather from tumblr
I don't get how the seasons have nothing to do with each other but have the same characters. Like for example, Constance has a daughter Addie in the first season. Aren't they the same names and family in Coven?
