Take a look around. Where are all the newspaper reports of imminent disaster in 2012? Why is this never on the TV news? There are two possibilities.
1) The only people who are aware that anything is expected to happen are new-age crazies and conspiracy nutcases. Every intelligent person in the world has somehow missed all the signs.
2) Nothing will happen and the whole thing is a hoax by people who love to attract attention, scare others and make money from the gullible.
Now tell me honestly. Which do you think is the more likely?
The whole 2012 thing is based on the intentional misreading of the Mayan calendar. Yes it ends on a date that translates into Dec 21 2012. But that's because that marks the end of what the Mayans call The Grand Cycle. It's like our calendar going from 1999 to 2000. Since the last calendar was carved hundreds of years ago, it didn't make sense to carve a whole other calendar for the next Grand Cycle (each lasting ~10,000 years) until it was actually needed.
Imagine if someone told you that the world is going to end on Dec. 31 2012 because that's the last date on their Hello Kitty calendar from Hallmark. You'd laugh at them right? Well that's exactly the claim that the whole "end of the world" conspiracy is using with the Mayan calendar.
Only a few thousand of us. Some will be murdered. More will die in traffic accidents. The rest will die of natural causes.
However, large numbers of truly stupid people are going to worry themselves sick over the next four months, thinking about some foolish prediction that the world will end before Christmas.
The Christian church is partly to blame for this. It promotes nonsense about "The End
Times", which has absolutely no basis in fact. If you believe in Armageddon, you are
swallowing a story written thousands of years ago in ignorant times.
Many people do, of course. Religion has a considerably dementing effect on the faithful.
