Caesar had been a highly successful general scoring victories wherever his legions

fought. When he returned to Rome and became a leading member of the Senate, it

seemed to some that he was aiming to take over as emperor. A group of senators,

including his old friend. Brutus, determined to prevent this by killing him. They plotted

their attack well, and on March 15, 44 B.C. stabbed him to death during a meeting

of the Senate. This led to a civil war with Mark Antony emerging with great power,

and Caesar's killers all dead.

Julius Caesar had more than 60 men conspiring against him, amongst them were 16 senators and his best friend and right hand Brutus. The overall reason behind the conspiracy to kill Caesar was for power, money, and personal gain . . . these motives were all wrapped and hidden in a banner of patriotism.

On the 15th of March (The Ides of March), the Senate held a meeting that Caesar attended. Whilst there, Tillius Cimber, a man begging for leniency for his brother who had been banished, fell to his knees and in doing so grabbed Julius by his toga and pulled him down at which point, his "friends" in the Senate stabbed him to death. Julius Caesar's body had 35 stab wounds.

Cliff notes.

He thought things were all fine until his friends went all stabby-stabby on him. And to think he was bringing them pizza-pizza for lunch, too.

One minute he was alive and the next he wasnt.

"Infamy! Infamy! They all have it infamy!"
