Zip lining is very popular here in Hawaii. Some cables are strung up between trees or towers and a device is strung below the cable and gravity lets the person slide down the long cables. The lines are usually strung through a rain forest or some other Beautiful place and the riders sort of "flys" through the jungle high above the jungle creatures. It is most usually safe, but some accidents have occurred.
Picture a clothesline. a motor pulls one portion of the line which brings the clothes to you, or sending the wet clothes out there to the end. Now picture those lines to be a couple of inches metal cables. Then hanging from that cable are more harnesses to secure a human being from the top of a mountain on a gentle slope down over the top of trees, beautiful sights, rivers meandering, etc etc.
Its a great experience and totally safe. Maybe her harnesses broke? Maybe she was not secured in the first place? The people running the zipline had no training and allowed dangerous behaviors?
Until we have a link, we cannot comment. They are regulated and supposed to be totally safe.
If the other posters are right and she came down with flesh eating bacteria, then there could have been contamination of the gear, the safety harnesses etc. Maybe the industry will look at this case and henceforth mandate some sterilization or use of bleach after every use.
I have always wanted to try that. Now it is like anything else. You must make sure the zip line company adheres to adequate safety standards. The better ccompaniesuse a safety harness that cradles the user and provides heavy gloves to not get fingers trapped in the wheels on top of the zip line.
It is of major importance to understand one can break a leg or worse walking across one's own front yard. That does not mean never using your own yard again.
It is cables that are usually set up in beautiful areas like Hawaii and Costa Rica. I was going to try it when we were in Hawaii but I got a little sick on a snorkel adventure and lost my nerve. It does seem scary but if there are professionals it should not be dangerous at all. So, I am wondering if something happened to her because perhaps she was zipping along on one of those "homemade" devices. I have seen that on TV where a woman got hurt because some family members decided to do their own "make-shift" zip-line. Do you have a link to the article? take care.
It's definitely something that I wouldn't do!
My daughter and several friends did zip lining about 2 weeks ago.
The things that young people do sometimes is just ridiculous.
I hope the injured young woman will get better soon.
i SAW that . the line broke and she ended up in the river - maybe alligators around too i think - but she cut herself on some rocks and got a flesh - eating BACTERIA from them before getting rescued . the girl might ' ve bin australian ????? but i dont think it happened there ( yahoo! news friday may 11 student with flesh - eating disease likely to lose more limbs - i read it , seems to 've CHANGED ) ( also : thurs sep 22 2011 hawaii zip line accident leaves 1 dead , 1 injured ) ( further note : may 2012 top yahoo ! guy turfed for ' beefing up resume ' and apology issued to investor third - point ) sounds like libel chill ta me )
Basically there is a horizontal cable and you put on a harness and they hook you up and you go zipping down the cable to the other side. It's fun. But I want to see that article, not sure why that would have happened.
Its a strep and it causes skin eating and it's terrible. It is caught through a cut or some other opening. I had a friend who lost both legs up to her hips. Sometimes it can spread really quickly. I dont know where they got the zipling thing.Thts why it's very crucial to always wash just the most minor scrapes.
Here's a video.
I was reading on yahoo news that this girl was zip-lining and now she is going to lose fingers and her feet. I never heard about zip-lining before. thank you
