A good anime that a lot of people start out on is Ouran High school Host Club. Telling you what it's about might spoil the first episode for you, but I can say that it runs along the lines of reverse harem, and every episode is filled with hilarious bits and pieces. Black Butler is my favorite anime, but it can create a kind of dark feeling, even though it has fantastic comic relief. Soul Eater was my first anime, and it ranks as my second favorite. It takes place in an academy for 'meisters' to train their weapons to become death scythes. It contains tons of action and comedy and I loved every episode of it. The whole Hetalia series is very funny, though it doesn't have much of a plot.. Still, I loved it and I'd definitely recommend that you watch it. If you're looking for some less mainstream anime's, you could try Angel Beats (hard to explain the plot but it's drama/comedy/action), Ano Hana (pure drama, if you chose to watch this, get ready to cry about half of your bodies weight in tears), or Btooom (this is kinda different, it's about a young adult who get's sent off to an island to play his favorite video game, 'Btooom', a high stakes, bomb throwing, hungergamesish death challenge, for real. If that made any sense.) Good luck!
In my opinion, I really enjoyed watching the whole Dragonball Series from beginning to end. I could watch it over and over again.
Try Elfen Lied and Higurashi.
Another is pretty good too.
