It's about a twelve year old boy named Naota who gets hit by a woman on her Vespa and weird shapes grow out of his head. The series is a metaphor for puberty and is only six episodes long. Barefoot Gen: Technically a movie and not a series. Set in Hiroshima, Japan in 1945 during World War II. It's about a six year old and his family living in the aftermath of the Hiroshima bombing. You should give it a try. The first series was done in 2003 and it is enjoyable but they remade the series again in 2009 I believe and that one is closer to the mangas.
