Just like the rest of the answerers said, trees falling from strong winds killed most of the victims. I was reading this in the news. As of now, the death toll is up to 39.

Edit: Hurricane Sandy also killed 69 people in Caribbean countries:

Some of you said trees killed them, no their stupidity killed them.
It astonishes me how people could still die after a long early notice of the storm. I don't pity the dead who were strong enough to MOVE away from risk zone or the weak ones who were capable to call for help but didn't.
You don't need to know rocket science to escape a storm after MANY days of notice. Those who escaped didn't do magic.
Trees falling on them, this was the root cause of the majority of deaths by Sandy's wraith.
Trees fell on houses/cars. One dead, one missing from the sinking HMS Bounty. Power failure for oxygen machine. Heart attack. Drowning. Hypothermia. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.
I heard most of them were out driving - in a hurricane - when a tree or large branch fell on their car.
Some people were In their house when a tree fell on the house and were crushed.
isn't this what is known as "having a morbid curiousity"
I'm just curious to know what was the major cause of deaths during tropical storm Sandy in NYC?
