The most important rule is cardio. You will need to be a good physical shape.The first people to die will be the fatties. Second, you will need both melee weapons and firearms. For good ideas for weapns, see my links below.

To add to my links, baseball bats and spears would make good melee weapons. You will at least a bare minimum of 500 to 1000 rounds of ammunition and make sure you buy a good quality weapon.
Next, you will need the basics. You will need food, water, medical supplies, rope, a knife, and a survival guide. For food, make sure that it is non perishable like dehydrated, canned foods, freeze dried, mres, or emergency food bars. I would recommend looking up information on how to dehydrate your own food. Also learn how to garden as it will be important when your food supplies run low. Learn also how to create clean water and also how to desalinize water. The easiset methods to obtain clean water is to filter through some fabric or layers of charcoal and sand. After that, you boil the water to destroy any harmful microorganisms. You will at least need several month worth of food and water.
You will also need a bugout location. A bugout location is an area that you go to that will provide more safety. I would recommend having a place out in a rural area. If not, then I would recommend going to a family or friend's house that you know live in an area away from a heavily populated area. In the event that you have to bugout, wait around for a few days or weeks as roads will be clogged. When you are making your first aid kit, make sure to stock up on alot of hydrogen peroxide as it can be used to clean infections, cure athletes foot, or cleaning your teeth.
As for clothing, you will need something that is water resistant and is also durable. A few layers of denim or hard leather can have resistance to bites. Motorcycle crash suits are good option or kevlar.
