Night Gallery was a great show. The texture of the show was a bit different from Twilight Zone in that TZ was more sci-fi based and Night Gallery was more horror based.
Rod Serling wrote a third of the scripts on Night Gallery. even though he didn't produce Night Gallery or showrun it but he was integral to the show. Producer Jack Laird did a phenomenal job on the music and giving talented young directors a chance to shine. It is filled less of Serling's polemical writing style. That was a conscious decision of producer Laird to have a better flow dialogue wise. Serling dictated his scripts by the pool to his secretary and unedited they sometimes seemed like dual monologues at times.
In addition, Night Gallery featured one of Rod Serling's most favorite scripts, They're Tearing Down Tom Riley's Bar. Which featured great character actor William Windom. Serling's other favorite teleplay was not a Twilight Zone episode but Requiem For A Heavyweight.
There was an excellent book written by Scott Skelton and Jim Benson called Rod Serling's Night Gallery: An After-Hours Tour. It is arguably the best book ever written about a TV show. Great stuff and it will make the most ardent TZ fan reevaluate Night Gallery.
In essence, I would say that Night Gallery was not only as good as Twilight Zone but at times was even better. All the episodes are available to watch on Hulu BUT try to catch the DVDS where Skelton and Benson really do a good job on the commentary.Famed director Guillermo Del Toro also does commentaries as well.
Rod Serling started developing Night Gallery right after The Twilight Zone went off the air. He worked on it for 5 1/2 years before the pilot aired. He started out envisioning it as an updated version of The Twilight Zone but it ended out with far less sci-fi and far more horror. It couldn't have been too bad since a couple of episodes were nominated for Emmys.
Twilight Zone was a classic, and is still showing today.
It had really great writers.
Night Gallery was, sometimes, a good show.
Not great. None of the same writers, not the same vision. Rod Serling and/or Richard Matheson didn't write any of the stories. I don't think the acting is as good, either.
Night Gallery is worth watching, but, no, it is not as good as the Twilight Zone. (not many shows could compare well to the original Twilight Zone)
Is Night Gallery a good show?
Night Gallery was a very good show.
Still better than most of the shows on today.
I really like rod serlings twilight zone but I'm wondering if night gallery is just as good
