The first few seasons are very good, as wuwr mentioned, the main writer left and the quality dropped a little. John Spencer's character is in the majority of the series, if I can remember correctly he is there until the 7th season although I may be wrong.

There is a bit of a drop off after season 3 or 4, but it's still good past that. I recommend the whole thing, but Sorkin left in the middle and the quality dropped off a bit. Great show though. Fantastic writing. Great characters. Great show.

It was a great show. As WUWR says, the quality did drop off after a bit, but it was still better than most of what you can find on TV.

John Spencer as Leo McGarry is brilliant, easily the best character, how long is he in it? because the actor did die
