2. Overwhelmed. There were as many men/boys protesters as there were women/girls.
3. Satisfied. The only thorn still embedded is how that minor monster got away so lightly.
4. Yes. No need to keep them feeding in jail. Capital punishment is given in India only in rarest of rare cases. This one qualified. This was murder most foul after making the girl go through painful humiliation she never deserved.
5. Women have equal rights in India. Women are doing very well in all the sectors. Otherwise you wouldn't have seen mass-scale protests led by women. I have lived my life with dignity and haven't been denied my place in society. True, I owe it to my parents who saw to it that their daughters weren't denied anything!
Sexual harassments/rapes are prevalent all over the world...even the most liberal, permissive societies aren't free of them. If one were to check crime-records, that would be quite revealing!!!
6. Awareness. Girls need to be made aware of their rights and be ready to fight for them. Being emotional, they get easily brain-washed and willingly sacrifice their rights and take secondary positions. It's okay for peace's sake...but it shouldn't be imposed and lead to simmering resentment.
Law-enforcing agencies should be more vigilant and cooperative.
7. Spooks? 24? Where are these shown? Not in India!
8. I don't know! Some of such dramas on family issues create more confusion and discord. I wish, though, that TV showed more programmes based on Women's Rights to help spread awareness.
9. Awareness in Western Cultures? About what?
Please don't think that women in India are all mute. We have a voice and we are making it heard. Government has passed many legislations for women empowerment. What needs to be emphasised is their proper implementation.
Population of India is so big and our courts are over-worked. That gets in the way of quick delivery of justice. Ours is a complex society...THAT is something Western Cultures won't understand!
PS: This may not be your homework...but surely, it seems like a survey! (No name-calling please!) ;)
1. All rape is horrific, although I can imagine being raped by multiple abusers and left for death must be one of the most horrific and I doubt the victim will ever be the same again.
2. I think every one has the right to protest regardless of my own opinions.
3. It doesn't surprise me that these men were found guilty - however I still have questions about police brutality and the way that they were questioned. There are still question around the bus driver who is dead whilst in police custardy.
4. No I oppose the death penalty - this was also a knee jerk reaction following this case. Rape was not punishable by death when this offense was committed. Politicians pandering to public opinion rushed through badly designed legislation which still allows the legal rape of transgendered people and rape within marriage even if the bride is 16. However for two people under the age of 18 who aren't married having consenting sex constitutes statutory rape.
5. No Whilst rape within marriage is legal women cannot be treated fairly. In addition there is no equal rights in education and employment.
6. Tackling the above is a start. However India needs to address inequalities based on wealth and the historic caste system. It is an unequal country and focusing on one demographic whilst ignoring wider issues is pointless.
7. Yes some of them not all.
8. No - Sometimes, Whilst I enjoyed 24 I don't think it had any wider social issues, However Prison Break did have the wider issue of a man on death row who was going to be killed by the state for a crime he didn't commit. (refer to point 3 and police brutality in India - how long before it happens over there).
9. Again - why focus on women and India? You could have Women in Bangladesh or young men from a lower caste in India.
10. Possibly - its primary function is to entertain and if it didn't hold my attention quickly then I would turn over. Whilst again it can highlight issues - if I it became more of a documentary I wouldn't be interested.
With respect to your sincere queries -I have travelled & witnessed the degradation of women in India -which is still widespread . The present outrage by crowds of men (& women ) reminds me of the hypocritical outrage at the murder of one child by two others years ago in Bootle ---------I knew some of the crowd -who where happy to go home & knock hell out of their wives & kids !Best wishes
There is no crime, however horrific, that conservatives do not mock and marginalize. Your post is purposefully detestable, and it has been reported.
Do your own homework, cheeky bugger.
