Trayvon was walking back to his father's house in a gated community Sunday evening.
Zimmerman - NOT a cop or security officer - spotted him and called 911 to report a suspicious person. Zimmerman was part of the Neighborhood Watch which is a volunteer program of private citizens. They have no official power. Their sole purpose is to watch for suspicious incidents and inform the police about them. That's it. They aren't supposed to follow, let alone confront, potential suspects.
However that's exactly what Zimmerman did with Trayvon, and ended up shooting him.
Now the reason this shooting has gone national isn't because of the races of Zimmerman and Trayvon, but because of the actions of the cops. See, normally when the cops are called to a shooting, they do a full investigation. Even if the shooter claims self defense, he's taken into custody and a judge determines if bail needs to be set or not. Once all the facts are collected the cops will make an official arrest if one is needed.
In this particular shooting, the cops didn't do any of that. Zimmerman claimed self defense, and the cops immediately declared the case closed.
Now it gets fuzzy. Even looking at the sketchy police report, there are several large gaps and missing information. For instance many facts didn't even show up until nearly a month after the cops declared this an open-and-shut case of self defense. The city prosecutor wanted nothing to do with this case.
When the case made national news, the FBI and federal prosecutors got interested in it - again due to the deliberate way the cops have ignored their own standard operating procedures. They've been doing their own independent investigation and supposedly will have some findings to announce next week or so.
You need to do better research. You "heard" Zimmerman was a cop. He wasn't so don't trust the source of that incorrect information. You "heard" that Zimmerman was provoked. Really? Only Zimmerman is saying that and it's an easy thing to say until the 911 tapes show that Trayvon was yelling for help right before he was shot.
Neighborhood watch people do NOT carry weapons and they do NOT pursue anyone. They are "watchers" and not "pursuers". Zimmerman's story does not pass the smell test, even with the limited information we have.

Your right about the guy not being white, he was Hispanic. But you are absolutely wrong about him being shot not because of his skin color. You need to get your facts straight and watch the news. Everyone knows he got shot because he was black. What bothered people the most was the fact that a minority killed another minority. He got some nerve racial profiling another minority. He was an innocent BLACK teenager minding his own business in the wrong place at the wrong time. Zimmerman was a fake wanna be cop. HE WASNT A REAL COP!!!!!! You're right; we don't usually hear about it, despite the fact that, in 2007 for example, the Black-on-White crime rate was 8 times that of the White-on-Black. That would seem to be a much more newsworthy story than a local shooting in Florida.
He called 911 that he found Travyon suspicious and likely to commit a crime or something but went ahead to shoot him after that. Any sane person would know that it is insane and illogical. As if I would believe that he was provoked and had to defend himself, Travyon only had skittles and some other sweet snacks at that time whilst the guy had a rifle or pistol whatever with him so what kind of threat is he actually posing???

How comes they'res so much going on about this kid, i know he was killed but why is the guy who killed him's race brought up, people are saying the guy who shot him was white when really he was hispanic. So since guy got away with it it's because he wasn't black. How come when a black guy kills a white person you never hear about it nor do ppl take it as a big deal but when a white person kills a black guy it all of a sudden goes viral and black ppl look at the situation as racism. I promise you if the guy he shot was white, no one would have ever heard of it. I even heard the hispanic guy was a COP and shot the kid because he was PROVOKED, if he was then he had every right to defend him self. Black ppl look at they're race as innocent and our race as racist and evil when really it's the other way around. I know damn well the kid wasn't shot because of his skin color.
