No it was ment to be an adult show. It was supposed to be aired on Adult Swim but they rejected them. Nickelodeon accepted it if they made it a kids show for their Saturday Morning lineup. Originally, Spongebob and Patrick were meant to be a gay couple, Sandy was a whore, Squidward was suicidal, and Mr. Krabs was a Jew.

It was meant to be a FAMILY show for kids AND adults. Kids and adults could both feel connected to it. Unfortunately, when Stephen Hillenburg left it became just a kids' show...
