He used a "sling." There are 2 types of slings and the story does not specify. One type is a pouch in the middle of 2 pieces of rope. A rock is put into the pouch, then grasping the ends of the ropes, you twirl the sling in your hand till it gains high speed, then let go of one of the ropes. This releases the rock to go flying to the target. The second kind of sling is what we call a "slingshot." A pouch is tied to the end of two pieces of rubber. The other end of the rubber strips are tied to a Y shaped stick. A rock is placed into the pouch and pulled back stretching the rubber. When you let go of the pouch, thew rock goes flying off. David probably used the first type because I don't beleive they had rubber in those days. BUT do not think lightly of slings. They can hurl a rock with the power of a .45 cal bullet.
