It depends on the type of gun. The three main types are pistols, shotguns and rifles.
Pistols DO sound like 'pops' (multi rapid fire or single shots) and have a higher pitch than shotguns or rifles. Unlike fireworks, they do NOT normally echo nor do they make hissing or crackling sounds.
Shotguns and rifles make a lower-pitch 'boom' sound but the boom/noise from a rifle will resonate longer than a shotgun.

Jacy gave you the best answer. Each type of weapon has a slightly different sound, based on bullet size and velocity. But some kinds of guns do make "popping" sounds if you hear them from a distance.
They sound like the loudest firework you ever heard. Now if you live in the city they it may of been a gun shot. If you live in the suburbs then it wasn't. If you live in the country, it was just some good old boys having fun.

Kind of like when a car backfires or when teenagers let off fireworks.

i heard people being loud outside, and then like 3 pops. it didnt echo or anything, but idk what guns sound like.
