The Originals centers around Klaus, Elijah and Rebecca along with new characters. It is set in New Orleans and is darker than TVD. Tyler from TVD is also on the show now.

They consist of Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah, they left town after losing a few family members and relocated to New Orleans where they had live about almost 3 hundred years ago. Depending on where you live The Originals air on Tuesday nights at 8 pm. Overseas it airs after the Vampire Diaries.
The Originals is a spin off series of The Vampire Diaries. It centers around the original vampires if you watched the early seasons of The Vampire Diaires, you'd know who they are. The Originals do not appear in season 5 of The Vampire Diaries.
