I think the one thing that impressed the most about Star Trek the Next Generation was how all of the special effects (okay, with a few exceptions like the icky thing that killed Tasha) were SO believable.

No, it's all fraud. If there were any basis to this stuff -- ANY basis AT ALL -- it would be all over the major networks.
