I would suggest you start with the first season of the revived series, with the ninth doctor, Christopher Eccleston. This season was first shown after more than 15 years off the air. So it explains a fair bit so that a new generation of viewers can understand what is going in. Once you have seen all the new series stories, then go back if you want and catch up on the classic series. You don't need to see the classic series if you don't want to. But if you do, you will have a richer experience of the Doctor Who universe by doing so. You will also notice just how much attention has been paid to continuity from the classic series to the new series.
The various generations of the Doctor occur in the following order:
Classic Series:
First Doctor: season one - An Unearthly Child
Second Doctor: season four - The Tenth Planet
Third Doctor: season seven - Spearhead From Space
Fourth Doctor: season 11- Planet of the Spiders
Fifth Doctor: season 18 - Logopolis
Sixth Doctor: season 21 - The Caves of Androzani
Seventh Doctor: season 24 - Time and the Rani
Eighth Doctor: Special - Doctor Who: The Movie
Revived Series:
Ninth Doctor: season one - Rose
Tenth Doctor: season one - The Parting of the Ways
Eleventh Doctor: Special - The End of Time (follows season four)
Twelfth Doctor: Special - The Time of the Doctor (follows season seven)
The War Doctor: season seven - The Name of the Doctor
Doctor Who is a science fiction aldventure show, it starts with him as a old man travling with his granddaughter. When the first actor had to leave due to health issuse, to keep the show going they came up with the idea of regeneration, so when he wears out a body or is badly injured he changes, still the exact same person, different body and since he has a new brain different personalit, same memories and morals ect. the searie ran from 1963-1989, then there was a move and the continuation in 2005. I became a fan of the Docot in 1980. The new series I would say Eccleston is very good(though the writers have done alot of stupid stuff there), Tennant's era was awful, they mostly turn it into a teen soap opera and Matt Smith is fantastic, very Doctory, though still some soapish elements, very looking forward to the 12(Capaldi)hopeing it gets back even more to the series it was meant to be
Oh god don't start with season one. Start at the revived first season with Eccleston (the first episode of season one is called Rose). It aired in 2005, and the 1963 show is a bit idiotic.
Doctor Who is about a time traveling alien who picks up hot girls and takes them to different planets. It's pretty fantastic. The doctor is funny and noble, he has two hearts, and it's just amazing!
I'm not a fan of a lot of the older series so I'm going to just tell you the revived doctors:
Eccleston starts it off in season one
Tennant starts in season two (he's my favorite)
Smith starts in season five
Capaldi has yet to start
Everything after about season five is utter sh!t though so that sucks. The head writer, Steven Moffat, took over the show in 2010 and he is a really awful writer.
above answer
Also could someone give me the general summary of what Doctor Who is about?
One more question: Can anyone tell me which series each # doctor starts? It's a little confusing :P
Thanks :)
