I'll just name a few of my faves.
Supernatural- totally recommended, about two brothers who hunt supernatural things and have been all their life. Though, you should watch from the start because alot happens. It's on S9 atm but it's easy to catch up. (Plus the main actors are HOT)
Teen Wolf- I know you said no teenage shows but this gets better as it goes in and you just can't resist Dylan O'Brien!
Arrow- Amazing, only 2 seasons so far but it's real good.
The Tomorrow People- fairly new, still on season 1 but wow! You should totally watch it, though again a bit on the teen side if things.

American Horror Story is different every season but season 1 was about a haunted house (9/10), season 2 was about a mental asylum (10/10), and season 3 was about salem witches (5/10)
Game of Thrones is a fantastic show. I don't like fantasy myself but this show is amazing. It's about noble families in the seven kingdoms of Westeros for control of the Iron Throne. It is on HBO. Give it a chance.
The Americans is about KGB agents in disguise as an American couple in 1981.
Breaking Bad is about a chemistry teacher who gets diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and has to cook crystal meth with his ex-student to pay his medical bills and for his family after he dies.

So I recently finished watching the show Sherlock, and I really loved it. I'm looking for a sort of unique show that's similar probably with a smart, intelligent main character (like Sherlock, and Watson), and that makes you think as you watch it.
I'm really not into the typical teenage tv shows like pretty little liars or whatever so nothing like that, and fantasty type stuff doesn't usually sound interesting to me but I'm open to a little bit of si-fi elements.
Sorry I'm bad at explaining what I'm looking for, but any answers are appreciated :)
