My cousin worked for The Bank Of America, in the World Trade Centre, so obviously I was concerned about her too. It turned out that she had gone to Florida for a week to stay with my other cousin.
We watched for about an hour, then the manager brought us all coffee and a glass of brandy, and told us to ring any friends or relatives that we were concerned about. He only found out later that he lost an uncle, a nephew and the man who was best man at his wedding.
I'll certainly never forget that day - just like millions all over the world will never forget it. It was quite possibly the worst thing I have ever witnessed. And to watch something like that unfold, being thousands of miles away and unable he help and unable to console people is absolutely awful.
I'm Irish and have never been to NY. But I have relations who grew up there so that is why I would have an interest in the place. I remember being in my room. I was on evening shift at work that week so It was probably a couple of hours before work when I heard. I was listening to the radio when the presenter said there were tv pictures coming through from news media in the USA that were so unbelievable that it was like a Hollywood movie. So I went downstairs to the living room and turned on the tv. It was surreal watching the towers burn. It was so hard to believe it when I saw the towers collapse. I didn't see the footage of the planes crashing into the buildings until it was replayed later. But I remember thinking how frightening it was. On a related matter, the following Friday was my 26th birthday and Ireland had a national day of mourning for the victims. I went to Dublin that day with my brother to see our favourite band. But the gig was postponed because they didn't fly as a result of events a few days earlier. And everyplace was closed anyway.
At school, aged 10. My Mum told me a plane had crashed into a building in New York while we walked home. I didn't think much of it being so young at first, but then we got home and switched the TV on in time to see the towers collapse. I remember the reports and seeing the Pentagon burning as well, but it's only as I've grown older I appreciate how that dark day will go down in history.
I was 9 years old at the time and my family and I lived in Virginia. We were only about 40 minutes away from the Pentagon. When everything started happening, I was at school, I was in 4th grade. And I remember the teacher next door to my class suddenly came into our room and she started whispering something to my teacher, and that was when me and all the other kids knew something was wrong because they looked so serious and upset. But they wouldn't tell us what was going on and tried to just continue on with the day and not scare us. A lot of kids started getting called to the front office for early dismissal because parents were coming to pick their kids up early. My parents had decided to just leave me there because they figured I was probably safer in the school than I would be anywhere else. But I found out what happened when I got home that afternoon. When I got off the bus and walked into my house, I found both my parents (my dad had been sent home from work) watching the news on TV, so I saw everything and my mom explained what happened. I was upset and scared by what happened, especially because the Pentagon attack was so close. i thought more terrorists were going to come attack and try to kill everyone in the DC area. And seeing the people jumping from the twin towers is something I'll never forget. :( Even at that age I was thinking how horrific it would be to have to choose between dying in a burning building or jumping out and falling to your death, and I felt really bad for everyone that died and for all the kids who lost their parents. I didn't personally know anyone who was affected, but there were kids in my area who lost parents in the Pentagon.
I was 13 getting ready for school (I live on the West Coast) and the news was on in the background. I got to school and asked around if anyone heard what happend and nobody did except for the faculty. By lunch time, rumors were flying around about who was behind it, the reasons why, and so on. As the day went on, the more serious the atmosphere became.
When school let out, I rushed home to listen to the radio and every station was doing a by the minute update. I stayed up late that night. It was hard listening to everything and seeing pictures later that week.
I was a librarian at the time and people started coming in the library saying that there had been a terrible plane crash into one of the twin towers in america, then other people came in and said another plane had gone into the other tower,i said in that case its a terrorist attack,we were all a bit stunned,i did not see any footage of the tragedy until i got home in the evening,i remember all the chaos at the airports,i had a friend who had been on holiday in america and she got stuck there for days when all the planes were grounded.
I had a couple days off of work so I was on my way to Disney World. While driving up the Florida Turnpike I listened to all the details on the radio. It was one of the only days that Disney World was closed and the turnpike suspended all fares both north and south for the day. It wasn't until later in the day that I actually saw on TV what happened. It was one of the saddest days in US history.
I was sleeping, got a call from my future sister-in-laws parents saying that they were OK and wanted me to see if I could get in touch with her and let her know ( I was renting a house with my brother/her at the time ).
I said OK, apparently in such a way that they realized I had no idea what was going on and they said turn on the TV. Was kind of in a daze for the next day.
i was watching "Live with Regis & Kelly" and about to get ready to go to work. i was on the road on my way to work when i saw the first tower fall. Everyone around was screaming and crying. A woman reporting on the radio started crying as she talked about all the people who were still in the building. It was awful. i also remember all the fire engines and police cars speeding towards Manhattan.
I was on vacation in France, fell asleep with the television on. I woke up to see the towers on TV, I thought it was a movie for a minute, only to realize what had happened. Called Family in the US immediate. I was quiet shocked. And wondered what else would happen. I am an adult.
I was too young to remember fully but they say everyone always remembers where they were and what they were doing. So I just wanted other peoples stories. how did you find out, what were you doing, what was your reaction ect
Long time ago. 11 September 1973, when the CIA and the USA staged a coup to overthrow President Allende of Chile and replace him with General Pinochet, who subsequently murdered 2,279 persons and tortured somewhere in the region of 30,000.
I was starting my first term in a new school, but I think other people were busy burning American flags.
I was a relief pub manager then. I had just opened for lunch and a customer said something was going on in New York but wasn't sure what. I turned on the TV and we watched live as the plane crashed into the South Tower.
About 2 hours from landing in the US aboard a BA 747 captained by a blond female. (with Tim Henman aboard)
We were diverted to Bermuda (2nd time in my life) after which we returned to London with just enough time to get new tickets - change airports and take another run at getting to Trinidad.
I am an adult and I was in Shrewsbury when I heard it on the radio.
I switched on the T.V. and watched it live.I was absolutely horrified and got all choked up thinking about the loss of life and how evil the act was.At the time they were saying that up to 10,000 people may have lost their lives. Thank goodness they were wrong but it was still devastating.
3rd grade doing multiplication. We were sent home early and my mom immediately sent me outside to play. I got an idea of what happened through my neighbors.
Couldn't remember my reaction. Shock, surrealism. I was still young and the concept of such a terrible tragedy didn't stick with me.
I was only 3 and I had thrown a fit because I wanted to watch a cartoon so my mom let me watch the cartoon instead of watching the news likes normal. Then she got a phone call from a friend who asked if my mom saw what happened and she flipped the channel over to the news and started crying when she saw.
well i was young in the bronx nyc also but i remember it like it was yesterday i was in elementary we were all called out the class rooms to go to the cafeteria an everyone parents came to pick them up but mine when i got out from school an went home i watched the news my dad worked in thou parts so i was crying an thought it was cool the next day my dad came to say he was ok but slapped the mess out of me cause i laughed an said it was cool an im nothing but in the 4 grade smh but now tht i look at at it wasnt cause he had to walk all away from there back home across the g.w bridge
I was at work in Oxford when the news broke, the general consensus at the time amongst myself and my colleagues was that `it looks like the burning of the Reichstag` - and none of us has changed our minds since then.
We will never know the truth about that most despicable act.
I was at school. stayed there for the rest of the day. I was the only one. I was 3 years old. I didn't know what was going on. all I was concerned about was the fact that I got all the crayons.
In London -wondering if this was a put up job to excuse the plann-ned bombing & slaughter of very many thousand sof innocent men women & children in the Midlle Easter countries ! International independent monitors found no conclusive proof of the perpertrators of 911!
I was 3 years old pretending to crash my new toy planes into the tv that was showing the news report.
