Certainly not the person awarded a CBE for having a sex change. They were awarded it for services for trans-genders. What a mockery of an award and who the hell thought this person worthy of it.
To me being awarded and MBE/OBE/CBE does not say much.My father who served in Malta at the tail end of WW2 and a few years after was put up for one.The Group Captain of the station was able to tell him that it was between him and a man at Heathrow Airport known as London Airport at that time.
The guy at Heathrow was chosen to receive it.He opened the door for the people going into the VIP area.
My father was a webfoot(Air Sea Rescue) in the RAF dumping unexploded bombs and towing mines out to a safe distance to be blown up to make Malta a safer place.
After my mother told me this i never bothered to watch or read who was getting what.
I am not writing this on a bias but opening doors or disposing of unexploded ordnance who would you choose.
It would be nice to see someone chosen at random from the public being given a knighthood. Can you imagine the scene, some bloke from a sink estate like Frank Gallagher of Shameless being knighted? Oh the pure joy of watching that. LOL
These are primarilly to recognise merit in terms of achievement and service. There are many categories that can be chosen for this and is no longer limited to just military service - it includes any industry. The Queen usually identifies those that deserve it.
There is contention over this process though, because the queen receives recommendations from very senior politicians - they are sometimes bribed (either party or individual support for example through monetary contributions) by very wealthy individuals, to have their names put forward for consideration.

Its usually for services to art or sport or music or any one of a thousand other good causes. I am not really certain who chooses them.
Anyone with dyslexia.
...or should be given a knighthood?
