i think it has to do with the fact that white males are made fun of in the media more so than ANY other type of person. you can't make fun of blacks on tv, or portray them as being picked on in tv shows...bc that's discrimination. women or girls are never THE "bullied" one on tv. Young white males are having a hard time determining their role in society. it also doesn't help that people are so liberal about what is considered "manly" these days. young men don't know if they should be more feminine, or if they should be strictly masculine. there is much confusion in society for young males!
What does 'undeprived' mean?
Wealth, affluence, privilege - or the lack thereof has - has never been a telling factor of whether someone is going to turn into a psychopathic killer.
While the CT shooter, and others like him, didn't have wealth and riches what they DID have was a galling lack of empathy, compassion, and self-control. Forcing kids to do a few hours of community service isn't going to fix this problem either.
While I agree the lack of knowledge the media has about mental illness is pretty shocking, it only helps to underscore the real issue here that, in general, we ignore the issue of mental health. We complain about our medical plans and medical insurance costs yet we continue to ignore our mental health industry which is woefully lacking when it comes to dealing with folks who are no longer children, so they can't be forced into treatment by their parents. They can refuse treatment entirely unless they present a clear and obvious danger to the public or themselves. Even then many places will still refuse to forcibly commit someone for fear of being sued. Of course by the time someone becomes an obvious threat to the public, it's too late for treatment as more often than not, the police get involved and usually end up having to shoot the person out of self defense.
It's not guns that are the primary issue here. It's that our mental health system is failing to help thousands, even millions, of people who are visibly functional yet mentally troubled.
What are you talking about? This country does a lousy job when it comes to mental illness. I suffer from Bipolar and Schizoaffective Disorders. Without medication I'm the guy that's having a conversation with a stop sign or standing on the corner arguing with people that aren't there. My meds cost close to $3000 a month. I luckily have the assets. If you met me you couldn't tell I suffer from a mental illness. Unfortunitly there are a lot of people not as fortunate as I am. But people will forget the real cause of this massacre and we'll just end up with a debate on gun control or inane people that don't understand mental illness at all and imagine their is some kind of witch hunt.
@edit: I ifind what you added commical. In Dr. Welner's comment on the Denver Theater Shooting he stated this.
"Mass shooting cases have the common motive of an attacker seeking immortality. Each of the attackers have different degrees of paranoia and resentment of the broader community. Some are so paranoid that they’re psychotic. Others are paranoid in a generally resentful way. Both have significant psychiatric illness. In these cases they don't have to hate in order to kill anyone. The threshold that the mass shooter crosses is one in which he decides that his righteous indignation and entitlement to destroy is more important than the life of any random person that he might kill."
The only reason he will not comment on a person in the news is:
"On occasion psychiatrists are asked for an opinion about an individual who is in the light of public attention or who has disclosed information about himself/herself through public media. In such circumstances, a psychiatrist may share with the public his or her expertise about psychiatric issues in general. However, it is unethical for a psychiatrist to offer a professional opinion unless he or she has conducted an examination and has been granted proper authorization for such a statement"
You need to be more educated on a subject before anyone gives any credit to what you say. Quote sources!
If there were no mental health problems with the shooter last week why did his mother
home school him when she was a teacher in the public school system..
I get tired of people blaming the guns all the time.
Modern mental health is letting to many people fall through the cracks.
I worked in law enforcement in a jail..
We had to many that came to jail that belonged in a mental health facility not in a jail.
They would bring them to jail because they had no other place to take them and they
wanted them off the streets or their care givers were tired of dealing with them on a
daily basis
Obviously no-one diagnosed with a mental health problem should have access to a gun.We need your help here.
There is a big elephant in the room that everyone walks around. These are undeprived young selfish males. no mental illness that has those symptoms. No mental illness affects young males differently. Take away guns from mentally ill but contine to give them to young males of prominent backgrounds. Why? discrimination. The disease may stem from being never taught selfless compassion. Charity work monthly added to a school cirrculum should be considered. Adding them to the mentally ill is a witch hunt. There is no mentally ill with different symptoms for young undeprived males.
