The terrorist group Al Qaeda had declared "war" against the US and Western Civilization for interfering with the peoples of the Middle East. This was not a country, but a small band of violent people who twisted the religion of Islam to justify their actions and also recruit new members.
The 9/11 attacks were planned by Osama Bin Laden and were designed to strike at what he felt were the symbols of America. The World Trade Center, to him, represented American capitalism. The Pentagon represented the US military. The 4th plane was supposedly heading to DC to crash into the White House or the House Of Representatives - either would have been a symbol of the US government. Fortunately the passengers on board had learned about the other planes, and fought back against the terrorists. Their plane crashed as the passengers tried to regain control of the cockpit.
Agreeing with Sasquatch we trained Bin Laden and Al Queida during the cold war to help fight the Russian's and the communists. Bin Laden and other terrorists don't like that the U.S. is a country that represents freedom they don't like the influences of western culture so they block it from their families.

The ironic part is that we trained them to fight the soviets during the late 1980's.
