What did they want?
The greedy politicians wanted a reason to start a war, that's why it happened.
It all depends on who you think is 'they'.
I'm a muslim and islam is a religion established for just over 1,400 years, it is a religion about the belief of one god who created this planet and all of mankind that exists. It's not a religion about war, at all except that halal (lawful and allowed) to fight in the way of god, as a means of defending our religion. This is the meaning of Jihad (not to kill people because they don't believe islam). Muslims are not dirty people 'who needs to use soap', as a matter if fact a muslim must stay clean and pure and perform Ablution before reading prayer and reciting the Quran. The clothes of a stereotypical terrorist have nothing to do with concealing anything, but plain simple clothing that covers one's body and sigify purity.
Many people including myself believe in the conspiracy theory relating to the 9/11. Although I think that some of the theories are deliberatley challengable to take away the credibility of the main true points.

Why did it happen? i can only say 'i think', and it's because of greed of oil and wealth from the U.S. government and the related illuminati. It's an event to hoodwink the american population and an opportinity to create false propaganda so they can create wars against middle eastern countries.
It was revenge for:
1. American's one sided support of Israel.
2. America's support for despotic regimes in the Middle East.
3. America's war on Iraq (Gulf War I) and stationing of US troops in Saudi Arabia during same.
This is what OBL said. Number three was what inspired him to take up arms and create Al Qaeda.
Basically it was blowback from America's reckless and interventionist policies in the Middle East.
The muslims are probing for any weakness in America. It was a test to see if the muslims will be able to restore their lost caliphate. So far only sneak attacks are feasible for them.
It turned out that the muslims have become a bit more dangerous than the Christians had thought. If it were not for Osama, America would have not found out just how dangerous the muslims had become. With all the oil money they have gotten they have been able to buy a whole lot more weaponry and to use it than America had previously thought. Now they even have nuclear arms. But their society has not progressed very much with all that money. They still are stone age mentality. They and their god hates, lies, oppresses, kills, and also molests little girls. They are truly led by Shayton. They cheered when the WTC towers went down, but they stood around in stunned silence when their hero Osama was assassinated. As hideous a murderer as he was, there was not a single happy face amongst all those muslims in Pakistan.
the Jewish state of Israel is to blame along with the united states of America for their refusal to condemn Israel for their actions against the Palestinians and other Muslim entities.
I just wanted to add that it wasn't a whole religious group that attacked America. Yes, the men who attacked the WTC were Muslim, but they were extremists. So it's unfair to blame "the muslims" for this attack. Just wanted to make sure the blame and hate wouldn't be improperly placed.
because extremist muslim groups hate everything America stands for and out of pure hatred and deep jealousy they terrorized us.
