You can't fight human nature.. It's just innate in us to try to retaliate. As barbaric as it may seem. We want vengeance to those that we feel have wronged us...
Not all people want criminals to die horrible deaths. But, most are complicit in the deaths of criminals, due to apathy. You are guilty of it if you live in a society where capital punishment takes place, and you do nothing to change the situation.
Humans have a tendency to derive joy from the pain of others they objectify as other. The Germans call it schadenfreude. This sadistic nature reinforces a communal sense in those participating. Something to the effect of: we are in fact "the good people." As opposed to those who they are murdering for being "criminals."
There is also an aspect of the "it could be worse" variety. People imagine that "at least I am not that person being murdered, and therefore my life is alright."
Not everyone is of that opinion.
But I believe if you commit a capital crime and are found guilty you should be put to death.
In a humane way.
When people hear of a heinous crime, the person is automatically guilty. An eye for an eye is unfortunately the way this society is.
When I read stories of little kids being raped, then killed....I think, if this was MY kid....I don't want the person to suffer, and child molesters has said..."If you turn me loose, I will repeat my crime"....so, why should WE tax payers pay to house this creep, feed IT, get it medical attention, can't be turned loose....so give them the gas chamber, it doesn't hurt. What do you think should happen lets say if someone killed your family member?
If someone hurt my son or any of my friends of family I'd want the same for them in return. It's human nature - anger.
Because people have little power and fantasise about being in control of others. I could go on but I think Smiley's answer sums it up best.
Because they believe one life is better than another's.
Why do people want the unborn to die horrible deaths
Every time i read an article about a crime happening people always wish death or torture of the person who committed a crime. I know that what the criminal did was terrible but that does not mean we should do the same thing to them in return.
