Why has Dr. Who become a phenomenon?

Yeah, it's the whole "Geek is Sheek" phenomenon. All of a sudden, it's become cool to be really geeky. So tv shows and movies that were once seen as fringe or geeky are now VERY popular (for example, DC comic and Marvel movies, Star Trek, Dr Who etc) and they get huge budgets, which helps their popularity even more. Then you get hugely popular shows like "The Big Bang Theory" where the main characters are "nerds". And gaming has gone through the roof...

It's not just the biggest thing in sci-fi. A lot of people who watch Dr. Who because of this craze don't actually watch a lot of sci-fi (and certainly not hard sci-fi), It's a show that has a lot of content, still coming out with content and (let's face it here) there's a lot of room for fan-girling it up. It's great that the show has gotten so popular (I'm not a fan, but I understand the appeal) and I'm not suggesting in any way that the new fans are less genuine than the golden-age fans, it's just a result from this weird movement we have going. For the first time ever, it's cool to be a geek...

Well, it has been around for over 50 years so has had plenty of time to seep into the public conciousness. We now live in a world where "Tardis-like" can be used to describe a deceptively large building, almost everyone knows what a Dalek is and time travel is more likely to be associated with The Doctor than with H.G Wells. Your comment about it becoming the biggest thing in science-fiction since Star Trek is innacurate. Star Trek began in 1966, three years after Doctor Who's debut. It has been suggested that every Sci-fi show since has been influenced in some way by Doctor Who.

Doctor who is a show suitable for everyone. The plot is brilliant and allows the actor to change when needed and has just been getting better and better. This has allowed the show to survive for over 50 years, and i think thats enough time to become one of the biggest shows today.

When a major usa channel started to air it- before only local PBS or small local stations aired the Classic series- there have been Who fans in the uk since day one and in the usa since the mid 70's when those few usa channel started to air it

remember No internet in the 60s-70's- Back then American Doctor Who fans had to watch Dubs of Dubs VHS tapes in grainy quality in basements and pizza banquet rooms.

I started to watch Doctor Who 28 years ago when a small local PBS station started to air it on Sat nights- and that station Still does and has for all these years. Also been a part of 2 Doctor Who/UK TV fan groups since the 80's- was at one this evening.

Its been around for a while apparently like half a century . I became really big all of a sudden so i figured i start watching but then i saw the number of seasons so N O P E

Its been out since the mid to late1900s just different actors

it was made in. Britian. It a funny show and well liked all over the world.

Fangirls

The last few years they've had boy toy doctors who appealed to fangirls, who gush about Doctor Who and buy merchandise.

Oh and Dr Who has been bigger than Star Trek int he UK, since before Star Trek. It's just that as a US phenomenon it was confined to nerdy guys who watch late night PBS, like Monty Python.

People love it. It has heart. That's all it takes. New fans shouldn't be resented.

its alot like downton abbey except it doesnt suck

It just seemed to come out of nowhere. All of a sudden I'm seeing references to it everywhere with people finding it absurd if you don't know a thing about it. I've seen a couple episodes out of curiosity, and it is a great show. However, how did it become the biggest thing in science fiction television since Star Trek?
