Two reasons
1. He`s narcisstic, he wants to be well known and he wants the whole world to hear about how he killed and did other sadistic things to his victim and by him pleading not guilty he buys himself several years to accomplish his goal
2. He arrogantly believes he didn`t do anything wrong and can skate on an insanity plea. Granted he was mentally ill at the time (still is) of the murder but legally he wasn`t insane at the time he decided to kill Jin Lu.

Magnotta attempts to plead not as guilt by normal conviction,
more to say that he did not know what he was doing, he was in mental distress, so this would make court see that assailant was not guilty of pre meditated murder,
but if you view (1-lunatic 1-ice pic) video, and view kittens be put under (by Magnotta) and review evidence and view of Janitor showing room (which should not have be open to public yet),

He's an attention whore. Narcissism is still in the DSM and he's working that angle I'm sure. I don't like the fact that just because he was a model there are a million and one pictures of him out there. Talk about stroking his ego, which I'm sure he was doing when they caught him at that internet cafe. And if he's found not guilty by reason of insanity I hope he shares his cell with that Winnipeg Greyhound Bus Beheader. Let justice be served!

2. He gets to spend some time in a big wide open court room instead of a tiny cell.
3. Our legal system is full of flaws. He might get off.
