You have to look at South Korea. That is a proven example of the foundation a country can subsist on. China is far surpassed that. All future development is incremental gain. The race is now who will control the region. That will not be Japan. The US will define the boundaries of that region and all that falls inside will be China. In 20 years when prosperity and education liberate the interior of China, the soft diplomacy and partnerships will be able to play on an even stage as the world does move to a single world government. It will look like an Oligarchy and enabled by a critical mass of big business and trade pacts. Japan will keep it's culture, but it will be the island of Nepal. The only hope of good treatment will be having access to nuclear weapons. Musical chairs is playing and China will get a seat. The US will get a seat. Russia will get a seat. Europe will get a seat. Africa and South America will get a seat. Sorry Mexico, and Canada - better throw in with the US, the Amero and then the World Bitcoin. National and regional sovereignty are already antiquated, the issue is that the world is, and will always be managed by a group of powerful and privileged relationships. That will continue as the individuals rights and the national rights are neutered. Now if Japan can create an army of underwater robots, that would be something else.

America still has more than twice the military forces than China does. Besides, China relies on The West for its economy. Trying to take over Japan or Australia or any other country would end its trade agreements with the US and therefore cause its economy to crash within a few weeks.
